"Spent Bleaching Earth" (SBE) Oil Extraction

The SBE Oil Extraction project was adopted from Professor Dato’ Dr Rosli Mohd Yunus’ patented invention (PI 20030197).

Professor Dato’ Dr Rosli created a process to extract solutes from spent absorbent, or from plant materials, by using organic extraction solvent and ultrasonic energy. The technique used in his invention has proven to improve the extraction process by as much as 95 percent.

Hence, the use of such process in the oil recovery industry would prove more beneficial, in comparison to the conventional one. This process has received both national (ITEX 2003 Kuala Lumpur) and international recognitions (SIIF 2004, Seoul, South Korea).

Waste Oil Extraction

The present research and development (R&D) project on Waste Oil Extraction is focused on developing a “Base Oil Recovery Plant from Spent Lubricant Oil using Solvent Extraction Technology”.

The objectives of this project are to develop a pre-commercialization base oil recovery plant – with an annual production capacity of 7,000 metric tonnes – and to patent and market the Solvent Extraction Technology.

This project was assumed from the lab-scale invention patented by Professor Dato’ Dr Rosli Mohd Yunus, which was fully financed by the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation under the Technofund Grant.

The Solvent Extraction Technology developed under this project is believed to be superior to the one currently in practice, in terms of product yield and quality. This new technology uses the composite solvent extraction to boost the recovery of base oil while simultaneously expelling impurities in the sludge as by-products. The novel features of this technology include an integrated process of extraction, accelerated flocculation, centrifuged filtration, solvent recovery and short-path distillation for base oil recovery.
